Green Family porcelain brick, China, Kangxi period (1662–1722) This rectangular porcelain plaque is decorated on both sides with scenes painted in polychrome enamels in the Green Family style. One side features, at the center of a wide border adorned with floral and foliage motifs on a green background, a mountainous landscape enlivened by a vast body of water, pavilions, a wall, and pagodas set among the vegetation, as well as rocks and flowering trees; a small boat is depicted on the lake, while a poem painted in gold in the upper left corner, accompanied by red seals, completes the composition. The other side is devoted to a historical and moral scene inspired by the famous episode of Fù jīng qǐng zuì —负荆请罪, literally “carrying thorny branches to ask for forgiveness”—drawn from the story of General Lian Po and Minister Lin Xiangru. The scene takes place in a palatial interior: several dignitaries dressed in long robes are gathered around the King of Zhao, while Lian Po, recognizable by his humble demeanor, comes to apologize to Lin Xiangru. The figures are arranged before court furnishings and amid richly decorated architectural elements, including tables, seats, and dragon motifs; the composition is framed by a wide geometric border and stylized cloud or scroll motifs at the corners. The depiction illustrates the moment when the general, having recognized the magnanimity of Lin Xiangru—who had deliberately avoided confrontation with him—comes to make amends. The legend illustrates the Confucian principle that ambition, prestige, and pride must be tempered by modesty and the ability to acknowledge one’s mistakes; it also emphasizes that the interests of the state and harmony among its officials must take precedence over personal rivalries and quarrels. 26 x 17 x 4.5 cm Patches where the blue enamel is missing and wear on the gilding.
