581 - GOTTARDO SEGANTINI_x001D_ Pusiano/Como 1882–1974 Maloja/Graubünden “Vecchio Palazzo Brentano a Bonzanigo.” View of the side facade of the Palazzo Brentano in Bonzanigo near Tremezzo on Lake Como. Oil on canvas, 1927. Signed “GottardoS” and dated. Signed, dated, titled, and inscribed with the location “Tremezzo” on the reverse. 80 x 60 cm. Gottardo Segantini, son of the artist Giovanni Segantini, worked as a painter, etcher, and art writer. After his father’s death in 1899, he enrolled at ETH Zurich; however, under the influence of the Swiss painter and architect H. E. von Berlepsch-Valendas, he chose to pursue painting and studied the technique of etching under H. Gattiker in Zurich. Segantini then returned to Maloja, where he used his father’s library as a studio and remained a resident until the end of his life. His artistic style was significantly influenced by his famous father; his paintings, in particular, show a clear affinity with Giovanni Segantini. In addition to winter and summer landscapes from his native Engadin —mostly from the Maloja area—which he depicted in shimmering light and vibrant colors, Gottardo Segantini’s oeuvre also includes a few other Swiss and Italian motifs, such as this painting depicting the area around Lake Como. This unusual view of the Palazzo belonging to the Brentano family—who later also settled in Germany—stands out from the rest of Segantini’s oeuvre; its dominant element is a stair-like alleyway bordered on one side by the building and on the other by a wall. The brushwork in nuanced earth tones, reminiscent of the Divisionist style favored by Giovanni Segantini, is interrupted by the vibrant green of the vegetation growing on the wall, while in the upper part of the painting, the luminous sky and the sunlit houses in the background create a spring-like atmosphere. Provenance: German private collection. Framed. [bg]
