Winterberg Kunst

71 - ERNST FRIES_x001D_ Heidelberg 1801–1833 Karlsruhe View of Civitella. Pencil drawing enhanced with white overpainting and accented with brown pen, 1824. Brothers Ernst and Bernhard Fries. Exhibition catalog: Galerie Fach, Frankfurt am Main/Winterberg-Kunst, Heidelberg 2017, no. 24. — On chamois-colored vélin. 28.2 x 43.3 cm. Edges slightly wavy and slightly dusty. With a smoothed crease at the left corner and a pressure mark at the lower right. Although the documented drawings depicting views of or near Civitella were created in September 1826 (cf. Wechssler WV 408–418), we are inclined to believe that this sheet was drawn as early as September 1824, during Fries’ first visit to the Serpentara. This is supported by the technique—pencil and white overpainting—as seen in Wechssler WV 183, 184, and 186; see also WV 192, ill. p. 185: View from the East toward Olevano, 1824. Furthermore, this drawing is of identical dimensions: 28.2 × 43.3 cm. [ms]
