Albert Jozef Claeys (1889-1967): A winter landscape, oil on canvas, dated 1964 Work: 90,5 x 65,5 cm Frame: 110 x 84,5 cm After training at Sint-Lucas in Ghent, Albert Claeys honed his skills at the Ghent Academy of Fine Arts. He specialized in decorative and monumental arts under the tutelage of the sculptor Felix Metdepenningen. Thanks to his mentor, Claeys received a scholarship to study in France. At the Ghent Academy, he also studied under George Minne. His fellow students included Evarist De Buck and Albert Saverys. He did not make his public debut as an artist until 1920, with a solo exhibition at the 'Salle Taets' in Ghent. The success of this first exhibition prompted the gallery owner to organize another show of his work the following year. During this period, he was also active in the local 'Cercle Artistique et Littéraire'. Exhibitions in Brussels followed later. Claeys gradually came to be regarded as a prominent modern Belgian artist; this was evident, for instance, in November 1924, when he participated in the renowned 'La Jeune Peinture Belge' exhibition in Paris. Like Valerius De Saedeleer, Claeys moved to the Flemish Ardennes during the interwar period. It was not until 1932 that he settled in Sint-Martens-Latem. Latem was gradually becoming a retreat for the Ghent 'beau monde', who owned country homes there or visited on weekends to stroll. Claeys, however, painted an imagined version of the village, completely ignoring its success as a tourist destination. In the late 1930s, he became a welcome figure at the 'Vyncke-van Eyck' gallery in Ghent. His work also gradually found its way into the museum collections of Antwerp, Ghent, Liège, and Leuven. He built a landing stage at his home so that he could paint from his small boat on the water. In this way, the local landscape of the Leie was captured in idyllic, dreamlike images.
