Work: 63,5 x 40 cm Paper: 70,5 x 48 cm Frame: 85,5 x 63,5 cm Mount Vesuvius erupted violently in October 1822, resulting in spectacular lava fountains and the discharge of glowing avalanches. (see e.g. David M. Pyle, 'Visions of Volcanoes', in: Interdisciplinary Studies in the Long Nineteenth Century, 2017, XXV, pp. 1-30.) Provenance: - Ex-collection Kasteel Herlegem te Kruishoutem - Herlegem Castle in Kruishoutem - Château d'Herleghem à Kruishoutem (Family van Pottelsberghe de la Potterie-de Lanier). The castle estate dates back to its first mention in 1419. Since 1662, the estate has been in the hands of the van Pottelsberghe de la Potterie family. The castle was built in 1711 on the foundations of an older farmhouse. It has remained in the family's possession ever since, and the art collection has been systematically expanded.
