Jan Frans De Boever (1872-1949): 'Le ruisseau', mixed media on paper Work: 21 x 11 cm Frame: 33 x 24,5 cm De Boever studied at the Ghent Academy under Louis Tytgadt, whose niece he married. Tytgadt introduced him to the circles of the nobility and the upper bourgeoisie, and he became a celebrated artist at the official Salons. Around 1909, he suddenly changed his style and began painting voluptuous women and prostitutes in morbid contexts. Skeletons, death, and eroticism flood his oeuvre. Once he had found his own style, a personal form of symbolism belonging to the movement of Decadentism, he maintained this style.
