LEWITT SOL (1928–2007) SQUIGGLY BRUSHSTROKES. 1992. Gouache on paper. 75.60 x 56.30 cm. Signed, dated, and personally inscribed. PROVENANCE: Work donated and inscribed by Sol LeWitt to his assistant Andrea “Bobo” Marischalchi, who collaborated on the creation of the Wall Drawings. Private collection, Florence. “Squiggly Brushstrokes” belongs to the broader “Brushstrokes” series, developed by Sol LeWitt primarily in the 1990s, when the artist moved away from the rigidity of geometric structures to focus on the free and sinuous movement of the painterly gesture. The brushstrokes, overlapping and intertwining in a vibrant succession of colors, create a dynamic and densely layered surface, while maintaining the artist’s interest in seriality, form, and the relationship between elements. The “Brushstrokes” represent a significant moment in LeWitt’s artistic exploration, in which the painterly gesture takes on a central role while remaining embedded within his broader reflection on variation and the combination of simple elements. The use of gouache on paper also marks an important departure from the rigorous geometry that had characterized much of the artist’s work. While maintaining his interest in seriality and the possibility of developing a single element through infinite variations, LeWitt introduces a freer, more organic, and gestural dimension into the *Brushstrokes*.Of particular interest is the work’s provenance: it was donated and dedicated by Sol LeWitt to his assistant Andrea “Bobo” Marischalchi, a collaborator in the creation of the famous Wall Drawings, thus establishing a direct link to one of the fundamental experiences of the artist’s practice.
