Jean PROUVÉ and Jules LELEU. Sanatorium Deck Chair. Created in 1936–37 for the Martel Sanatorium in Janville, this deck chair—made of bent tubing with a wavy profile—was designed by LELEU and manufactured in Jean PROUVÉ’s workshops. A metal mesh covers the seat; the rack-and-pinion backrest allows for angle adjustment, and a bar at the feet makes it easy to move the lounge chair. The Martel Sanatorium in Janville had 180 rooms, and it is highly likely that approximately that many of these lounge chairs were produced. Originally lacquered (usually gray), this piece was sandblasted in preparation for restoration before being stored for over twenty years, evidently in a dry environment. The wooden armrests appear to be original. A major design piece just waiting to be restored to its original condition.
