A RARE CARVED, CELADON AND UNDERGLAZE-BLUE PORCELAIN SNUFF BOTTLE JINGDEZHEN, 1810-1870 To Be Sold Without Reserve Of slightly tapering cylindrical form with a waisted neck and wide mouth, finely painted in underglaze-blue on a raised transparent ground, of a deer, a monkey, a bee and a bird in a rocky landscape, all set against a pale celadon ground Height: 8.3cm Provenance: Sotheby’s London, 18th June 1998, lot 1515 Hugh Moss (HK) Ltd, 30th June 1998, (a copy of the original invoice available) The subject here relates to advancement through the ranks and emolument, the Chinese words for bee, ( - fēng) bird, ( - què)monkey ( - hóu) and deer ( - lù) combined “Fēnghóu Jùjù” ( / ) the 蜂 雀 猴 鹿 蜂猴聚爵 禄 pun intended having the same sounds as a wish for advancement through the ranks and being well rewarded This bottle and also lot 50 in the Piper Collection are examples of a small rare group of ‘three colour’ combination with raised relief designs Ω This Lot was imported outside of the UK, under the Temporary Admission scheme. 5% import VAT will be charged on the ‘hammer’ price and 20% VAT will be charged on the ‘buyer’s premium’.
