A BLUE AND WHITE ‘SWIRL’ GLASS OVERLAY DOUBLE-GOURD SNUFF BOTTLE ATTRIBUTED TO THE PALACE WORKSHOPS, BEIJING, 1740-1850 To Be Sold Without Reserve The sapphire-blue double-gourd with splashes of white swirling around the swelling body Height 6.2cm It is rare to find a saphire blue and white splashed double gourd snuff bottle from the Palace workshops. No other bottle appears to be recorded with such dynamic and vibrant markings. In Chinese culture, the double gourd (hulu, is a powerful and auspicious symbol representing good 葫芦) fortune, health, longevity, and family prosperity. The Mandarin word for gourd (hulu) sounds like fulu ( ), 福禄 which also translates to “happiness, prosperity, and official rank” so it has a particularly auspicious double meaning, and perhaps that is why the craftsmen chose two colours to accentuate the message Ω This Lot was imported from outside of the UK, under the Temporary Admission regime 5% import VAT will be charged on the ‘hammer” and 20% VAT will be charged on the ‘buyer’s premium
