690 - 3 antique hunting flags belonging to Landgrave Ludwig VIII of Hessen-Darmstadt. 18th century. From approximately 74 cm x 39 cm to 69 cm x 41 cm. Each measures approximately 80.5 cm x 60 cm with frame. Oil on linen. Towel-sized linen scraps in their original dimensions, stamped with a wooden seal. Some were part of the collection of Landgrave Ludwig VIII of Hesse-Darmstadt, who frequently stayed in Stockstadt and on the Kühkopf to hunt. The red and black oil paints, applied to the scraps using stencils, show in some cases the initials of the former sovereign, LLZH (Ludwig, Landgrave of Hesse), and the year of production, 1737. Also depicted are the Hessian Lion, the heraldic animal of the House of Hesse-Darmstadt, and a Turk, who was likely intended as a symbol of terror to commemorate the Turkish siege of Vienna in 1683. A hunting flag was hung to scare off or divert game during a hunt, or to prevent it from escaping from a cordoned-off area. The term is also the origin of the idiom “to slip through one’s fingers.” Signs of wear due to age. See photos for condition.
