Tenier tapestry in wool and silk. The Village Doctor Borders imitating a frame decorated with twists, acanthus leaves, foliage, and shells. Height: 267 cm - Width: 206 cm Lille, which became part of France under the Treaty of Aix in 1668, attracted the Brussels tapestry weaver Jean de Melter, who began working there in 1688. Guillaume Werniers, his son-in-law, took over the business in 1700. Following the Brussels tradition, he produced numerous “Ténières” based on the paintings of David Terniers II, known as “Le Jeune.” Upon Guillaume’s death in 1738, his widow, Catherine Ghuys, continued to run the workshop until 1778, signing her works “Vve. Werniers.” She continued to use the frame border found on our example, allowing us to date it to the very end of Guillaume Werniers’s production. Expert: IEP CONSEIL
