Molded mahogany armchair with a square, cane-backed seat; the armrests and their curving uprights rest on a straight apron with joint blocks adorned with medallions. Tapered legs with gilded bronze feet. The seat is upholstered in old-gold velvet. Louis XVI period, stamped by Louis Moreau (1740–1802, master cabinetmaker in 1764). H. 90 m – W. 57 cm – D. 48 cm (signs of wear, damage, and missing parts) Provenance: Residence of Mr. and Mrs. J.P., Avenue Montaigne. This armchair is inspired by the series that the Marquis de Marigny commissioned from cabinetmaker Pierre Garnier for the dining room of his private mansion on Place des Victoires in the 1780s. It reflects the Anglomania of the era and the fashion for chairs made of solid mahogany with clean lines.
