Very large porcelain platter with a heraldic design for the Italian-Spanish market (Cantelmo-Stuart). China. Qianlong period (1736–1795), circa 1750. This very large dish is decorated in “Famille Rose” glazes, with cascading flowers on the rim and a chain motif on the body. In the center is painted the coat of arms attributed to the Cantelmo-Stuart family: Or, a lion Gules, a label Azure with three pendants over all. Dimensions: 41 cm. Two chips along the rim. The commission is attributed to Joseph Cantelmo, Prince of Pettorano and Duke of Popoli. Joseph Cantelmo-Stuart belonged to the last generation of one of the great feudal families of the Kingdom of Naples. The Cantelmos, of French/Provençal origin, had been established in the kingdom since the 13th century and had amassed extensive estates in the Abruzzo and the Terra di Lavoro. Joseph Cantelmo-Stuart was a Neapolitan patrician, Prince of Pettorano, Duke of Popoli, and a First-Class Grandee of Spain. He was a gentleman of the Chamber of King Louis I of Spain; he succeeded his father in 1723 and is recorded as early as 1724 as a brigadier in the Spanish Royal Navy. Upon the restitution of his estates in 1725, he continued to live in Madrid in the service of Philip V. On April 22, 1717 in Blois, to Catherine de Boufflers (1702–1738), lady-in-waiting to the Queen of Spain. This rare and previously unpublished commission is not listed in any work on Chinese export porcelain.
