USA Niagara Falls & the Surrounding Countryside as Seen from the Grand Bank. 1815. Black ink, pencil, and gray wash on four joined sheets of handmade paper (watermark "Ruse & Turner, 1812"). Inscribed lower left. 24.7 x 137.1 cm. A large-format, artistically accomplished panorama of what are arguably the world’s most famous waterfalls, likely drawn on site from a vantage point indicated on the sheet as “Grand Bank.” The unsigned but precisely labeled depiction shows the waterfalls on the left, a sparsely wooded plateau behind them and in the center, and a wooded hilly landscape with scattered houses on the right. - The handmade paper used comes from the Joseph Ruse and Richard Turner paper mill, Upper Tovil Mill, Maidstone, Kent, England. - Several tears, two of which have small missing sections along the upper edge; the joints between the sheets show slight browning; an additional center fold on the reverse, with the obverse showing slightly more pronounced browning; occasional minimal finger and water stains.
