188 - Book Covers - Silver Cover

Book Covers - Silver Cover An intricately crafted, filigree book cover with embossed reliefs and ornaments. It depicts biblical scenes—John the Baptist pointing to Christ and the Baptism of Christ in the Jordan River. Surrounding tendrils, flowers, cherubs, and musical motifs frame the scenes, typical of Baroque and Rococo silversmithing. Both wings bear silver and hallmark marks. 26 x 15.6 cm (when open). Probably a South German (likely Augsburg or Nuremberg) Rococo silverwork, circa 1730–1750. The combination of openwork rocaille scrollwork, vases of fruit and flowers, cherubs, and angels playing music corresponds exactly to the repertoire of South German Rococo silversmiths, as documented, for example, in Augsburg.
