La Gadoue Blue Stone Sculptural Object Glazed stoneware, handmade and built using the coil method One-of-a-kind piece Brussels 2021 H55 D24 cm In Belgium, “blue stone” refers to the gray-blue limestone quarried in Wallonia, an iconic material in the country’s architecture, from house thresholds to monumental facades. The Brussels-based studio La Gadoue, founded by Éloïse Maës and Audrey Werthle, takes its name from this material for this sculptural stoneware piece, a tribute to the mineral of their region. Made using the coil-building technique—an ancient method involving the layering of clay coils—the piece bears the marks of the artisan’s hand. The two designers, whose practice blends ceramics and textiles, demonstrate their focus on textures and colors in this work.
