Philippine School; late 19th century. “Landscape.” Oil on canvas. Shows signs of restoration. It has a period Elizabethan frame. Measurements: 63 x 94 cm; 71 x 103 cm (frame). This painting offers a serene depiction of a Philippine riverside landscape, featuring a small boat with a fisherman and a traditional bahay kubo-style dwelling, recognizable by its light structure and characteristic thatched roof. The scene is set against a backdrop of lush vegetation and calm waters. The work is part of the tradition of Philippine landscape painting from the second half of the 19th century, which was deeply influenced by Spanish painting. The centuries-long Spanish presence facilitated the introduction of European academic models, while local artists gradually incorporated into these artistic languages an increasingly direct observation of the landscape and the particularities of the tropical environment. The result was a style of painting in which elements inherited from the European tradition—composition, atmospheric perspective, and the treatment of light—were applied to a specifically Filipino reality. It has been restored.
