The Rolex Submariner reference 6536 ranks among the most fascinating early versions of the legendary diver’s watch. Produced for only a few years starting in the mid-1950s, it belongs to the highly coveted generation of so-called “no-crown-guard” Submariners—created during a period when Rolex was still continuously refining both the design and technical features of the model. A defining feature of the 6536 is its 6-mm winding crown and 100-meter water resistance, which clearly distinguishes it from its famous sister model, the 6538 “Big Crown,” equipped with an 8-mm crown and rated to 200 meters. Collectors are particularly enthusiastic about the remarkable diversity that emerged during the short production run. The black and gold “gilt dials” with radium luminous material come in several variations: very early examples feature the sought-after red depth rating “100/300,” while later versions display different inscriptions, including “100 m = 330 ft.” The characteristic Mercedes hands also evolved over the course of production; early watches may feature the rare “long-neck” hour hand. The black aluminum bezels are equally varied. Early “no-hash” versions omit the minute markings for the first 15 minutes, while later bezels introduce additional graduations and, in some cases, the distinctive red triangle at the zero position. All in all, reference 6536 vividly illustrates a pivotal phase in the development of the Rolex Submariner during the 1950s. Its short production run, numerous variations in details, and the unmistakably stylish beauty of the early Submariner generation make it one of the most intriguing and desirable references for discerning collectors of vintage Rolex timepieces.
