1937–1938. MANUSCRIPT. (CIVIL WAR). COLLECTION OF LETTERS ALL ADDRESSED TO JOSEP CAPMANY, who was staying with relatives in VITRY-SUR-SEINE, sent from Llançà and other locations in France. The letters are from various friends who went into exile in France during the Spanish Civil War; they fled the Republican zone because they supported the coup d’état and hoped to return later, as well as from relatives still in Spain. Some are written in Catalan and others in Spanish or French; most are handwritten, and a few are typewritten. One of the typewritten letters is from his mother, who writes the following: “I am very surprised by what you say—that you are waiting for instructions on what to do— simply because your friends have gone to the other Spain. I have never believed that you would want to find yourself in the sad predicament of facing your cousins Jaumet and Paco in a trench, so that they might kill you or you might kill them...” This highlights the schism—at every level—that the conflict brought about and that permeated all spheres of society. In other letters, friends (Victor Giralt and Miquel Heras, from Llançà) describe the hardships of their precarious work in France to earn a few francs, while expressing a desire to travel to Buenos Aires or enter “White Spain.” An interesting family group.
