1874. BOOK. (GEOGRAPHY—CHINESE CHARACTERS). PARLEY, PETER: UNIVERSAL HISTORY OF THE BASIS OF GEOGRAPHY. New York: Ivision, Blakeman, Taylor & Company, 1874. Small 8vo. 700 pp. Illustrated with numerous engravings in the text. Bound in publisher’s cloth, leather spine, heavily scuffed and with slight loss at the top of the spine. Handwritten ownership inscription reading “Wang Chu Tsung/ Shanghai Oct. 9, 1879.” The first chapters of the book contain extensive annotations in Chinese characters, in ink and pencil, as well as intonation marks. It appears that the owner was learning English from this book, perhaps with the intention of emigrating to North America.
