1530 - AN ICON DEPICTING THE DESCENT INTO HELL AND THE DELIVERANCE OF THE FOREFATHERS FROM HADES Russian, 18th century Tempera on wood panel with kovcheg. Partially gilded. In the central panel, Christ is depicted before a green, radiant mandorla, standing upon the shattered gates of Hell. With his right hand, he grasps Adam by the hand, raising him from Hell. Behind Adam stand other souls awaiting salvation, including Solomon, David, and Saint John the Forerunner. To the right, Eve kneels, followed by apostles and righteous figures from the Old Testament. Two selected saints are depicted on the borders. The flesh tones are executed with great finesse, and the folds of the garments are rendered in white and beige. A vertical crack has been restored. 33.5 x 30 cm.

The folds of the garments are modeled in white and beige. Vertical tear, restored.
