A C.1575 VIEW OF CAIRO AND THE PYRAMIDS OF GIZA, EGYPT, BRAUN & HOGENBURG, CIVITATES ORBIS TERRARUM A large engraving from the atlas 'Civitates Orbis Terrarum' showing a view of Cairo in Egypt, including the Sphinx and the Great Pyramids of Giza, accompanied by Latin text discussing the history of the city and its environs. The 'Civitates Orbis Terrarum' is the most famous and most comprehensive of all the great town atlases. Georg Braun and Frans Hogenberg began the work for this atlas in 1572, intended as a companion work to Abraham Ortelius's Theatrum Orbis Terrarum. Braun was responsible for editing the work and Hogenberg engraved the majority of the views. There were also many talented contributors that provided original drawings including Joris Hoefnagel (Spanish and Italian towns), Jacob van Deventer (Netherlands), Stumpf, Sebastien Munster (German), and Heinrich von Rantzau (Danish). Georg Braun (1541-1622) was a German Catholic cleric. He spent most of his life working for the church of St. Maria ad Gradus in Cologne. Abraham Ortelius assisted Braun with the editing of Civitates Orbis Terrarum. Frans Hogenberg (1535-1590) was one of the greatest engravers of his time. He engraved the majority of the plates for Civitates Orbis Terrarum as well as Ortelius's 'Theatrum Orbis Terrarum'. Hogenberg also made sure to detail the foregrounds of the plates to include the fashion of the time. Published in Augsberg, Germany, c. 1575. Dimensions: 13 1/8 x 19 1/8 in., (33.3 x 48.6 cm.) Condition: Margins trimmed, probably for framing, with no effect to image but some text of first line on verso impacted. Otherwise good, with normal foxing for age.
