This new edition expanded upon the original collection of letters put together by the Sainte-Marthe brothers in Paris in 1651, with additional notes and references throughout. Professor Claude La Charité has since shown that most, if not all, of the letters compiled by the brothers were invented by them, and were not original works of Rabelais.
