216 - AN UNUSUAL FRENCH MODEL 1771 ARTILLERY SWORD WITH CAUCASIAN ENGRAVED BLADE, LATE 18TH CENTURY

AN UNUSUAL FRENCH MODEL 1771 ARTILLERY SWORD WITH CAUCASIAN ENGRAVED BLADE, LATE 18TH CENTURY A rare and unusual sword combining a French M1771 eagle-shaped artillery sword hilt with a blade belonging to the Ottoman sphere of influence. In particular, the blade is engraved in two places with a script that we cannot decipher, perhaps a Caucasian script, as well as a depiction of a turbaned man, a crescent moon coat of arms, a sun with a face, and various weapons, especially bows and arrows. While the hilt is 18th-century in manufacture, the blade may be from the mid- to late 17th century, or contemporary with the hilt. Perhaps the inscription could offer clues if deciphered. Dimensions: L: 28 1/2 in., (72.4 cm.) Condition: Blade pitted throughout. Gilding worn at forte. Brass hilt with an antique patina. Blade slightly loose. Please make all inquiries before bidding.
