A WILSON SWIFT SHEFFIELD BOWIE KNIFE WITH AMERICAN PATRIOTIC INSCRIPTION, 19TH CENTURY A spear-point style Bowie knife produced by Wilson Swift of Sheffield, England, etched with the phrase 'America, the Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave' at the center of the blade. The blade is also marked 'DCL' and 'Wilson Swift, Broad St, Sheffield'. The hilt is composed of two horn grip scales, one being inset with three mother-of-pearl circles. The blade is kept within a red leather scabbard with a gilt geometric and floral cartouche at the center. Sheffield, England, 19th century. Dimensions: L: 14 1/4 in., (36.2 cm.) Condition: Leather of sheath worn, with some loss toward the tip. Gilding of leather well preserved. Blade with a few spots of light pitting. Grip with a hairline crack on one scale.
