LORRIS (Guillaume de) and Jean de MEUNG. *Le Rommant de la Rose*, newly revised and corrected beyond the previous editions. Paris, Pierre Vidoue for Galliot du Pré, 1529. In-12, 18th-century red morocco binding, spine decorated with grotesque motifs and a green morocco title label, gilt fillets on the covers, interior lace, gilt edges. First and only early edition in round type. This is the second edition to feature the text revised by Clément Marot, who also wrote the preface: *Exposition moralle du romant de la rose*. This lovely edition, part of the Galliot du Pré poetry collection, is illustrated throughout the text with fifty charming woodcut vignettes—including the title page illustration—featuring thirty-three subjects, some of which are repeated. These illustrations, which appear here for the first time, were certainly engraved specifically for the text, which they follow closely. The finest among them are of excellent style and, as Brun notes (Le livre illustré en France au XVIe siècle), demonstrate “a genuine effort at innovation.” Galiot du Pré’s printer’s mark appears on the verso of the last leaf. A very fine copy bound in a lovely 18th-century morocco binding with a grotesque-style decorated spine—a most rare condition. Title page and last leaf are browned. A small tear with a loss along the outer edge of the second cover. Traces of a torn-out bookplate on the first inner cover. Acquired by Émile Rossignol in 1960.
