Ridinger, Johann Elias (Ulm 1698 - 1767 Augsburg). Allegory of the Four Continents in Hunting Scenes: Africa, America, Asia, and Europe. Four mezzotint plates. Circa 1750. Each signed in the plate. Each 43 x 53 cm. Thienemann und Schwarz 1131-1134.- With the watermark initials HGL.- Each with a five-line motto in German and Latin below.- Africa: A fallen horse lies beneath a lion, behind it an attacking bear, two natives with spear and bow and arrow fight the animals. America: African hunters attack an elephant, which is pinning two men beneath its body, a dog has bitten into the elephant's ear. Asia: A leopard attacks two mounted hunters to protect its cub lying on the ground. Europe: Mounted hunt for a stag with hounds. - Among other things, the unfinished backgrounds, only suggested by outlines, testify to state prints of these compositions by Ridinger that are unknown in the literature. - Each with small tears at the edges, completely backed with Japanese paper, resulting in a smoothed center fold, partly somewhat dusty or creased in the white outer margin. - All with a faint collector's stamp on the verso (crown over initials; probably not in Lugt's collection).
