Efwe Ornikleios. Priapus Grove. 12 etchings. Kythera (near Darmstadt), (Ratio-Presse), 1921. 1 double sheet (title, contents, printer's imprint) and 12 etchings. Large quarto. Loose in a simple cardboard slipcase (this slightly faded at the edges). Hayn/Gotendorf IX, 467; Englisch, Labyrinth of Eroticism, pages 242. - One of 70 numbered copies on Dutch laid paper (GA 100). - Despite this large print run, which may not have been printed at all or was largely destroyed by censorship and war, it is very rare. - Behind the pseudonym Efwe Ornikleios is the book and type designer and illustrator Friedrich Wilhelm Kleukens. Kleukens resigned from the management of the Ernst-Ludwig-Presse, which he had founded, in 1914 and established the Ratio-Presse in Darmstadt. He illustrated many of the publications himself with lithographs and etchings. For example, 'Phallic and cunning fantasies dominate the instinctual life of 'Ornikleios,' who, in his portfolio of pen drawings, 'Priapus's Grove,' sings a paean to male potency...' (English). The etchings are printed in light blue and each mounted in a passe-partout.
