A complete lower jaw from a mature male wild boar, consisting of the left and right dentary bones fused at the symphysis. The specimen exhibits natural osteological characteristics, including bunodont molar and premolar teeth. The jaw features large, curved canine tusks characteristic of the species. The bone surface displays a natural aged patina with visible pits and foramina. The incisor sockets at the anterior of the jaw are empty. The specimen is unmounted and free-standing. 5 1/4" H x 5" W x 10 1/2" D. A curiosity carried home from the Benchleys' travels, kept for the fun of it. From the personal collection of Peter Benchley (American, 1940-2006), acclaimed author of Jaws, accomplished diver, and prominent advocate for ocean and shark conservation. Proceeds from the Peter Benchley Collection will benefit five ocean conservation organizations: Peter Benchley Ocean Awards, WildAid, Beneath the Waves, Blue Frontier and Environmental Defense Fund. CONDITION: The mandible shows a natural aged patina with dark spotting throughout. The right tusk is significantly damaged, featuring a longitudinal split and a large section broken off near the base; the detached fragment is present. The left tusk is intact but exhibits natural wear and fine longitudinal hairline cracks. The molar and premolar teeth are mostly complete with minor chipping to the enamel. There are no other visible structural faults to the bone. NOTICE TO BIDDERS: The absence of a condition report does not imply that the lot is in perfect condition.
