GERMAN COINS AND MEDALS UNTIL 1871. EICHSTÄTT, DIOCESE. Johann Christoph von Westerstetten, 1612–1637. Single-sided copper token, ø 20 mm (1.42 g). 1634, mint mark not confirmed. Octagonal. Within a highly oval corded circle, the upper part of a crozier pointing to the left between a split year date. Cahn - Gebert - RRR! Extremely rare! Very fine. Provenance: Collection of the Prince-Bishopric of Eichstätt. Acquired from the Johannes Diller Numismatic Shop in 2012. The attribution to Eichstätt, as well as the attribution of a minting under Johann Christoph von Westerstetten, has not been documented in the existing literature. On February 12, 1634, the city of Eichstätt was captured by Swedish troops during the Thirty Years’ War and almost completely destroyed. In such times of crisis, many affected cities minted square-shaped emergency coins (so-called “Klippen”). For Eichstätt itself, no copper emergency “Klippe” from this year has been recorded to date. Shortly before that, during the “Kipper” and “Wipper” period (ca. 1620–1623), the Bishopric of Eichstätt had officially issued small copper coins (such as the “Kipperkreuzer”). However, these were round and dated from the years immediately preceding 1634.
