Milton Glaser (1929–2001) – Bob Dylan. 1966. 83.8 x 55.8 cm. Original poster, lithographic and offset print, unmounted. Grade A—shows original creases. To promote his upcoming album, *Bob Dylan’s Greatest Hits*, the CBS record label commissioned Milton Glaser to create a special poster to accompany it. For this project, the most famous American poster artist of the time drew inspiration from Marcel Duchamp’s self-portrait. The result is a whirlwind of colors blending psychedelia and pop art, evoking the visual effects of drugs that were gaining popularity within the counterculture. There is a legend surrounding this design, as the word “Elvis” can be made out in the hair. One might have thought it was a tribute to Elvis Presley, but decades later, Glaser debunked this legend—one of which he himself was unaware, since it was a complete coincidence. While this image is now considered a classic of American culture, it is not actually a poster but rather a promotional handout that came with the record. This explains why the originals still bear these crease marks. References: A copy of this poster is housed at MoMA and the Smithsonian Institution in New York.
