Saul Steinberg (1914–1999) — The New Yorker. 1976. 107 x 73 cm. Original poster, offset print. Mounted on canvas. Grade A-, very minor, discreet mounting flaws. With the humor and near-surrealism for which the artist is known, he presents here a panoramic view of 9th and 10th Avenues in New York, looking out over the rest of the United States all the way to the Pacific Ocean. This image also served as the cover of the magazine’s March 29, 1976, issue. The idea was likely to symbolize that the magazine covers topics from across the entire United States—and even beyond—from a New York perspective. That is why the poster-map features Washington, D.C., Texas, Mexico City, Utah, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Nebraska, Kansas City, Chicago, and even Canada, Japan, China, and Russia. As with the next poster, the striking visual goes beyond a press poster and is almost a tourism poster for the U.S. as seen through Woody Allen’s eyes.
