Pierre SEGHERS. *L’Homme du commun* or *Jean Dubuffet*. With two original lithographs by J. Dubuffet. Paris, Éditions Poésie (printed by Mourlot frères), 1944. Large 8vo, paperback, illustrated cover with a raised design, modern slipcase. First edition: a major monograph on the painter, dedicated to Jean Paulhan. Limited edition of 161 copies; one of the 140 printed on Arches paper (no. 29). Two original lithographs by Jean Dubuffet, one on the cover and one, in color, as a frontispiece. They are dated and signed on the plate in September 1944. One of the first three books illustrated with original lithographs by Jean Dubuffet. In fact, that same year, Dubuffet illustrated *Quelques mots rassemblés pour Monsieur Dubuffet* by Paul Éluard and *Vache bleue dans une ville* by André Frénaud (published by Pierre Seghers), each featuring a lithograph. The year 1944 was also marked by the heated controversies sparked by the painter’s first exhibition at the René Drouin Gallery. Slight smudging from the lithograph on the frontispiece; marginal pinholes in places.
