One of 50 copies of the first edition on Marais Crèvecoeur (No. 32), initialed by the author, featuring an original etching by Max Ernst, signed and numbered by the artist. Jean Paulhan, to whom Michaux had sent a copy of this collection of proverbs, wrote to him: “Thank you. I was expecting your proverbs. They are very rich, they ring with wisdom, and one can reflect on them almost indefinitely. […] What a trap! Impossible to escape. With every passing minute, we’re caught a little more. I’m having a hard time prying my fingers away from your book.” Attractive binding by Pierre-Lucien Martin. From the library of Jean-Paul Guillaume, with bookplate.
