OTTO MÖHWALD (1933 Krausebauden – 2016 Halle (Saale)) Interior. View into the Studio, 1995 Oil on canvas. 100 x 80 cm. Framed. Signed and dated (19)95 in the upper right corner. Provenance: Private collection, Hesse Otto Möhwald trained at Burg Giebichenstein in Halle, studying under Kurt Bunge, among others, and returned there decades later as a professor and head of the painting department. In between, he spent years as a drawing teacher and ran his own printmaking studio with fellow artists. Möhwald reduces his studio space to a framework of walls, door frames, and a tiled floor, painted in a subdued, almost monochromatic palette of gray, beige, and off-white. The gaze falls through the line of the open door into a deeper, darker room, where an easel or a rack made of narrow brown rods takes shape—barely more than a hint of tools and work. The checkered tile surface in the foreground lends the painting a calm, almost meditative structure and unerringly guides the viewer’s gaze into the depth of the image. Despite its clear architectural order, the room seems strangely detached and empty, as if frozen in a moment devoid of action. The cool, subdued colors and the diffuse light create a contemplative stillness—not a place of production, but a space of waiting, of concentration, and perhaps also of the painter’s solitude with himself.
