GERHARD MARCKS (1889 Berlin – 1981 Burgbrohl/Eifel) Crouching Gnome, 1954 Bronze. 37 x 20 x 24 cm, including base. Foundry mark: Barth, Rinteln, Cast No. V. Catalog number: Rudloff 617 Provenance: Galerie Nierendorf Despite two world wars and the restrictions imposed by the academic art establishment, Gerhard Marcks developed his own distinctive artistic language. With his delicate sculptures, he ranks among the most significant German sculptors of the 20th century. In 1945, he was appointed to the State Art School in Hamburg; from 1950 onward, he worked as a freelance artist. The gnome sits with his legs spread wide and leaning slightly forward on the top step of a roughly hewn, stepped limestone pedestal. His hands lie folded between his knees; one foot rests on the lower step, while the other seems frozen mid-motion—as if the sculptor had caught him in the moment of rising or sinking back down. His gaze is directed downward, into the void. The long nose and the simplified, almost archaic facial features give the head a mask-like quality—a face that conceals more than it reveals; the hair lies in finely incised strands close to the skull, as if carved into the bronze itself. Marcks uses the mythical creature not as a mere curiosity, but as a kind of permission: What would seem improper, even almost crude, in a human—the stocky limbs, the exaggerated profile, the heavy, crouching posture—may be depicted in the gnome without violating the dignity of the representation, and yet, precisely in this alienation, a profoundly human condition. The unpolished base reinforces this tension: The stone remains stone—raw, heavy, rooted in the earth—but the bronze becomes a being, breathing, as it were, watching, pondering. Thus the figure sits upon its material as if on a bench to which it does not truly belong—a foreign body that has nevertheless, by silent agreement, taken up residence there.
