Titled on the reverse (The Arrival of the Holy Inquisition, the Guardians of Pure Doctrine under Pope Paul the Only, with his concubine, Princess von und zu Dollar. (Pillars of the System)), signed and dated (Feb 1982). Signed and dated on the reverse. Hallmann is regarded as a singular figure in postwar German art: a painter who, using drastic, often blasphemous imagery, attacked the omnipotence of the Church and the State, stylistically situated between Surrealism, Art Brut, and folk art. This painting from February 1982 is a central work in this body of work. In a fiery red-orange valley landscape, the Inquisition marches as an endless procession stretching to the horizon, watched over by two crowned vultures.
