Robert Mangold (American, 1937) Square within a Square #3 (Sandy-brown) - 1974 Acrylic and pencil on canvas 168 x 168 cm Signed, titled, and dated on the stretcher Provenance: John Weber Gallery, New York (1975) The Robert and Suzanne Pannier Collection, Bruges Published: Robert Mangold, Paintings 1964-1982 [catalogue raisonné], Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, 1982, cat.212 Exhibited: Amsterdam, Stedelijk Museum, Fundamentele Schilderkunst, 25 April - 22 June 1975, cat.8. At first glance, Robert Mangold's paintings appear governed by the certainty of geometry. Prolonged attention, however, reveals a quieter ambition: not the pursuit of mathematical order, but the subtle negotiation between line, colour and the shape of the support itself. It is in these measured deviations that Mangold's distinctly personal response to Minimalism emerges. Rather than pursuing the impersonal precision often associated with Minimalism, he retained the presence of the artist's hand through subtly drawn pencil lines and carefully modulated fields of colour. His paintings are neither exercises in geometry nor optical illusion, but sustained investigations into the relationship between shape, surface and perception. Executed in 1974, Square within a Square #3 (Sandy Brown) belongs to the series of geometric paintings through which Mangold established the pictorial language that would define his mature oeuvre. Working on his characteristic 72-inch square format, whose near-human proportions establish an immediate dialogue with the viewer, Mangold explored the relationship between the shape of the support and the geometry inscribed upon it. Here, a second square, rotated onto its tip, occupies the centre of the composition. Drawn in pencil, its outline appears both exact and tentative, reinforcing Mangold's conviction that geometry should remain a lived and perceptual experience rather than a fixed system. As the artist remarked, "I think all of my works are about things fitting or not really fitting together, with the structural shape either dictating the terms of the interior structure or setting up a framework the interior structure plays off." This subtle negotiation between the outer support and the inner form lies at the heart of the painting. Applied evenly with a roller, the acrylic surface suppresses expressive gesture, allowing colour to function as atmosphere rather than emotion. Against this restrained ground, the pencil line assumes remarkable presence. Far from describing a mathematically closed figure, it introduces slight irregularities that gently unsettle the apparent certainty of the composition. The painting's equilibrium therefore arises not from perfect symmetry, but from the delicate tension between measured structure and the inevitable variability of the hand. Acquired from the John Weber Gallery, New York, in 1975, it was included that same year in the artist's exhibition at the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam. In Square within a Square #3 (Sandy Brown), objecthood, proportion, line and colour remain in quiet equilibrium.
