Campaign of the Piedmontese army in 1848-49] [Paris, Lemercier, 1851-55]. In 2nd (570 x 455 mm). 20 multi-colored, watercolored, gum-pulled tableselithographed (some marginal blooming.) Coeval half-cloth binding with gilt title to front plate. Superb complete suite. Interesting witness to a famous series of military paintings byGrimaldich was commissioned by the minister ofaguerra, Alfonso Ferrero della Marmora, to illustrate the campaigns of independencein the years 1848-49. The artist executed 35 plates in pencil and watercolor that were reproduced in chromolithography in Paris at the hands of specialized engravers, including Bayot and Davis, then printed in only 1,200 copies by Lemercier. The entire collection was finished in the fall of 1853 and offered as a gift to Napoleon III.
