JAPAN, CIRCA 1900-1920 Set of five small smiling male masks, black lacquered, the eyes inlaid with glass. In a red frame. H. from 6 cm to 6.7 cm each - Total size with frame: 23 x 48 cm A small lacquered wood mask of an emaciated man, signed in gold on the reverse; and an enameled ceramic netsuke-mask. H. 6.7 cm - 4.8 cm (Accidents to the five frames; wear to the emaciated man) Provenance Private collection of Monsieur Auguste Gérard (1852-1922), French ambassador to China (1893-1897) and Japan (1907-1913). Then by descent to the current owner. Present in the family inventory made in November 1976 under number 170 page 9 "5 [Nlö] XVIII° century lacquer masks (accidents)". An anonymized copy of the page concerning this lot may be issued to the buyer.
