Battista FRANCO dit Il Semolei (Venise v. 1510 – 1561)

Hercules and Cacus Pen and brown ink over black pencil lines, brown wash 22 x 18.8 cm three-lobed cut-out form, inscribed in a spandrel Annotated in the mounting margin at the bottom in black pencil "T.Lawrence/Richardson" and in the center in pen and brown ink "Battista Franco". Slightly oiled, small stains and small tear at bottom right On verso annotation by Richardson (L.2983) Provenance : Former Sir Thomas Lawrence collection, stamped lower left (L.2445) Former collection of J. Richardson sr, stamped lower right (L.2184) Stamped on verso at bottom of frame "Galleria del secolo Roma". The figure of Hercules is found in reverse in the engraving of Hercules and the Hydra of Lerna.
