CHINA, Ming Dynasty, Wanli period (1573-1619). Very rare and important box in three colors lacquer. Rectangular in shape with slightly rounded corners, presenting on the lid a very finely carved decoration in relief and standing out on a black and ochre background of two five-clawed dragons with sinuous bodies, heads turned downwards, chasing the flaming pearl above which appears a stylized "shou" character, in the clouds and above the celestial waves and mountains, the sides decorated with peony and chrysanthemum flowers among foliage. An eight-character mark "大明萬曆乙未年製" painted in gold on the inside of the lid, dated to the yiwei year of the Wanli reign, corresponding to the year 1595. H: 8,5 ; W: 29 ; D: 18 cm (small accidents and lacks, restoration). Provenance : - Henri Marie HUCHET de CINTRE (1808-1876), brilliant officer, native of Morbihan, incorporated in the Royal Navy at the age of 17, in 1825. Promoted to Chevalier of the Legion of Honor in 1849, then to Officer. Appointed Captain in 1856. Director of the port of Lorient in 1864. He carried out numerous missions, notably in the Pacific, during which he came into contact with Her Majesty Queen Pomare IV, sovereign of Tahiti, Moorea and its dependencies, whose reign lasted half a century (1827-1877). From his stays in Tahiti, he brought back to Brittany many royal gifts that his children would inherit. Stationed in Hankao (China), following the massacre of French missionaries in Korea, he took part in the French military expedition against Korea in 1866 (from October 11 to November 12), at the command of the "Le Breton", a second-class gunboat, under the direction of Rear Admiral Pierre-Gustave Roze, commander-in-chief of the naval division of the China seas and governor of French Cochinchina (1865). Flags, cannons, eight thousand rifles, about twenty boxes of silver ingots, gold, lacquers, jades, precious books, archives, rolls of paintings fell into the hands of the French... This tricolored cinnabar lacquer box decorated with dragons, Wanli mark and period, was brought back by Henri Marie Huchet de Cintré on the occasion of his missions in the China Seas. - By descent An identical box presented for sale at Sotheby's Hong Kong, sale of April 7, 2013, lot 3168.
