Joaquin SOROLLA Y BASTIDA (1863-1923) The white roses, 1916-1919 Oil on canvas, signed lower right. Inscribed on the reverse side "Given by BM to Geneviève in 1965". 63 x 75 cm (63 x 91,5 cm) Vertical crackling lines. Mounted on a frame reducing the composition. Joaquín Sorolla made this painting between 1916 and 1919, taking as a model the flowers in the garden of his Madrid home, which today houses the home in Madrid, which today houses the Sorolla Museum. Built in 1910 according to the painter's wishes, this garden, whose layout is typical of Spanish gardens, is a favorite subject of the artist, who sketched different of it between 1916 and 1920. The roses, by their virtuous whiteness, irradiate the canvas with light, of light, bringing out all their symbolic force in the eyes of the spectator.
