PAIR OF SCONCES WITH ANGELS IN ACANTHUS LEAFY TERM, BY PIERRE CHIBOUT, END OF THE EMPIRE PERIOD in chased and gilded bronze. They are represented with a band in their curly hair, the wings raised, the arms raised carrying a lanceolate corolla from which five arms of light spring up, four of them in leafy cornucopia and one in the center in quiver also leafy. Monogrammed on the back A late Empire period pair of ormolu wall-lights with acanthus leaf ending angels by Pierre Chibout 57 x 25,50 x 31 CM - 22,4 x 10 x 12,2 IN. - - Bibliography The drawing of this model is preserved in the museum of the decorative arts of Paris (Album Maciet 93, drawing CD 3767) and published p. 356 of Hans Ottomeyer & Proschel's book "Vergoldete Bronzen" To be compared Pair of sconces sold at Christie's during the sale "A Parisian pied-à-terre curated by Hubert de Givenchy", September 14, 2021, lot n° 1, with a provenance from the Kugel gallery Pierre Chibout (1779-1824), a Parisian master bronzemaker, renowned for his quality of chiseling, delivered bronze furniture sconces, torches, candelabras, and andirons for the imperial family and the highest dignitaries of the Empire. The pair of sconces that we present for sale is inspired by the model called "aux enfants" created by Pierre Philippe Thomire at the beginning of the 19th century. It was a great success and was the subject of numerous orders from the imperial furniture store. Thomire delivered the first series to the Château de Fontainebleau in 1808. He was followed by the best bronziers who used the model to decorate the emperor's bedroom, the prince's apartments and the empress's grand salon at the Château de Fontainebleau. This was followed by commissions for the Château de Rambouillet and the small salon of the Empress at the Trianon.
