L.Sachse & Co Berlin" in the stone below the image, signed and inscribed "Comp. u. gez v. Mathilde v. Waldenburg", "Druck v. L.Sachse & Co Berlin" and "Lith. v. P. Rohrbach" on the annotation sheet Date: c. 1840 Description: Portrait of St Elisabeth of Thuringia (1207 Pressburg - 1231 Marburg) in nun's habit with crown, back to back with a young clergyman with crosier. In the frame formed by ivy vines are four nuns whose names, according to the annotation sheet, are "Maria Raphaela", "Maria Emanuela", "Maria Euphemia" and "Maria Theresia". St Elisabeth, the patron saint of Thuringia and Hesse, is known for her charitable work and her commitment to the poor and needy. Keywords: 19th century, Romanticism, Portraits, Germany, Size: Paper: 72,1 cm x 51,3 cm (28,4 x 20,2 in), Depiction: 47,4 cm x 37,9 cm (18,7 x 14,9 in) Condition: Good condition. Slightly foxed. The edges of the backing sheet are slightly discoloured and soiled. The paper with the annotations shows foxing as well as numerous coarse creases.
