J. ERHARD (1795-1822), Horseman in the sunken lane, around 1817, Etching Johann Christoph Erhard (1795 Nuremberg - 1822 Rom): Horseman in the sunken lane, c. 1817, Etching Technique: Etching on Paper Catalogue Raisonné: , 49, II/II Inscription: Signed lower left in the printing plate: "J C Erhard fec" Date: c. 1817 Description: The picture shows a picturesque landscape with a horseman riding along a path through a wooded area. Large rocks and trees are depicted in the foreground, their detailed structure emphasised by fine hatching. The rider wears a wide-brimmed hat and gazes into the distance. Imposing mountains rise up in the background, which are given impressive depth through the use of light and shadow. A building with a tower can be recognised between the trees, possibly representing a church or a country house. The composition draws the viewer's attention from the tranquil scene in the foreground to the dramatic backdrop of the mountains in the background.
