Unknown (18th), Portrait of C. Neumann (1683–1737), Copper engraving Unknown (18th century): Portrait of Caspar Neumann (1683 Züllichau - 1737 Berlin), 18th century, Copper engraving Technique: Copper engraving on Paper Inscription: Inscribed in the printing plate: "Casparus Neumannus Regis Prussiae Consiliarus Aulicus [...]". Date: 18th century Description: Portrait in costume typical of the time and place. Below miniature of the chemical laboratory or alchemist's workshop. Person: Caspar Neumann (1683 Züllichau - 1737 Berlin) German chemist and pharmacist. As a supporter of Stahl's phlogiston theory, Neumann helped it to gain acceptance in Berlin. He advocated a clear description of substances and constituents of substances. He rejected terms such as philosophical phosphorus. Even if Caspar Neumann's name is not associated with any particular individual achievement in the chemical or pharmacognostic field, his merit lies in having scientifically elevated the entire concept of pharmaceutical activity. It was his achievement that, after him, made possible a time in which scientific interest increased and, as a result, significant things were achieved in 18th century German pharmacy.
