(around 1604 Antwerp - after 1674 England) after Thomas Willeboirts (1614 Bergen op Zoom - 1654 Antwerp): Portrait of Petrus de Iode the Younger, copperplate engraver, from *Het Gulden Cabinet*, 17th century, Copper engraving Technique: Copper engraving on Paper, relined at the margins on Paper Impression Quality: A good print with rich blacks and crisp lines; slight grey haze in the hatched areas of the background. Inscription: At the lower part signed in the printing plate: "Tho. Willeborts pinxit. | Petr. de Iode sculpsit. | Io. Meyssens excudit.". At the lower part inscribed in the printing plate: "PETRUS DE IODE". Date: 17th century Description: A three-quarter-length portrait of Petrus de Iode, facing left, his gaze directed straight at the viewer. The subject has shoulder-length, curly hair, a moustache and a goatee. He is dressed in a dark robe and a white lace collar; his right hand holds an object (possibly a tool or graver), whilst his left hand rests on the back of a chair. The modelling is achieved through delicate cross-hatching, which creates a pronounced chiaroscuro effect. The background is graded using layers of horizontal hatching. Below the illustration is a multi-line biographical text in French, along with details of the publisher and engraver. This work is thought to originate from the anthology *Het Gulden Cabinet*, which contained a large number of artists’ portraits.
