(around 1604 Antwerp - after 1674 England) after Joannes Meyssens (1612 - 1670 ): Portrait of the Flemish landscape painter Jacques d'Arthois from *Het Gulden Cabinet*, 17th century, Copper engraving Technique: Copper engraving on Paper Impression Quality: A good to very good print, with clear lines, rich blacks and nuanced hatching. Inscription: At the lower part signed in the printing plate: "Ioan. Meyßens pinxit et excud. | Petr. de Iode sculpsit". At the lower part inscribed in the printing plate: "IACQUES D'ARTHOIS". Date: 17th century Description: A portrait of the painter Jacques d’Arthois (1613–1686), depicted in a three-quarter view after the left. The subject has long, wavy hair, a small moustache and a dark, buttoned robe, as well as a light-coloured turn-down collar with a bow. His right hand is raised, with his index finger extended, suggesting a gesture of oration or explanation. The background depicts a slightly cloudy area rendered using cross-hatching. The lighting emphasises the face and hand, whilst the shoulder and robe recede into deeper shades of hatching. Below the illustration is a two-line French caption, followed by the engraver’s and publisher’s marks. This work is thought to originate from the anthology *Het Gulden Cabinet*, which contained a large number of artists’ portraits.
